Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very fine and are nothing in comparison to the needles used when you have a blood test or injection. When a needle is inserted some people feel nothing at all whilst others feel a small prick. You may also feel a dull ache, tingling, numbness or heaviness while the needle is inserted. Most people find acupuncture treatment relaxing and even fall asleep during their treatment.
What can I expect from my first treatment?
If you decide to come for a free consultation, this gives you the opportunity to visit myself at the clinic so we can discuss what you are seeking treatment for and how acupuncture may be able to help you. This consultation normally lasts approx. 15-20 mins. If you decide to go ahead with treatment a full consultation will be arranged which will last approx. 1.5 -2 hours. During this time a full medical history will be taken and I will not only ask you for information about the specific condition you are seeking treatment for, I will also ask you about your health in general. This allows me to put together a picture of your full health and to put together a treatment unique to you. The appointment will also include your first treatment.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person. The general rule is that the longer you have the particular condition, the more treatment needed, however there are always exceptions to the rule! The number of sessions needed will be discussed with you during your initial or first consultation.
What should I do before a treatment?
You will need to eat a light meal before attending your appointment and would recommend wearing loose fitting clothing.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare and occur in less one per 10,000 treatments, these include drowsiness or feeling light-headed. However if at any time you are concerned please do not hesitate to contact me.
Should I inform my doctor that I am having acupuncture?
If you are currently receiving treatment from your doctor I would advise you to make them aware that you plan to, or are receiving, acupuncture treatment.
Should I continue taking me prescribed medication?
Yes. If the aim of your acupuncture treatment is to reduce the amount of medication you are taking, withdrawal of medication must be done under your Doctor's supervision.
